He is recorded in the 1641 protestation rolls. In the 1639 Muster Roll of Sir Nicholas Stanning's Regiment of Foot is listed a John Ripp of Breage. Whether or not it is this John has not been verified. In 1643 at Chagford in Devon, the Godolphin regiment were involved in a skirmish at which it is possible that this John was either killed or more likely wounded, to return home to die in his native Breage.
