Notes for James White (Spouse 1)
Info from 1891 Census of Loudon, Ayrshire
James, the only surviving son, went to school at Temple, where he met Jeannie Mitchell whom he afterwards married, and later to the Royal High School Edinburgh for his secondary education, and to Edinburgh University to U.P College where he took his M.A. and after an Assistantship at Greenock was inducted by the U.P. Church at Newmilns in Ayrshire. This was an old Anti Burger (see end) congregation. He was considered a very fine preacher and is always very highly spoken of by people who knew him.
In 1885 he married Jeannie or Jane Mitchell his schooldays sweetheart in the Rutland Hotel, Edinburgh and they settled down to many years in Newmilns. A new manse was built for them at the top of the hill, and we grandchildren spent many happy Christmases en famille there, and summer holidays too.
There were 6 children of this marriage and all survived. The oldest was George White, then Jean Fairlie Mitchell, then Elizabeth White, John Mitchell, Dorothy Mary and James White. The family were taught at home by Granpa (I think he quarrelled with the local schoolmaster) and then went to Kilmarnock Academy for secondary education.
