One thing I did note was in the HEARTH TAX for Eccles in the BFHS MI booklet done by Elspeth Ewen.
I do not know the date of the entry but it contains, in Eccles Parish, a WILLIAM WINCHESTER, coatter (sic).
It appears he lived at Kennetsydheads. The farm of KENNETSIDEHEADS you will see on the OS map, Landranger 74, c.2 mile west of Eccles

The term 'coattar' is defined as the inhabitant of a 'cot house or cottage' i.e. a farm labourer.
A 'portioner' is 'the occupier of part of a property originally divided among co-heirs' - or 'the possessor of a small portion of land.
