"I’ve recently been sent an extract from an ‘Old Portland Diary’ which was contributed by Frank B Morris, I think it might have been to the Somerset and Dorset Family History Society (Vol 8, p119):
1820 August 16. John OTTER cut his throat from ear to ear and then hung himself. Buried 19th of this month. 1833 May 16. Benj STONE(slinger)was burnt in Effigee with some bacon on account of a dispute with his wife. 1838 August 26. On a sunday night Shadrach STONE and Edward STONE fell over cliffs at Tout and broke their necks with a scuffle with the Preventive men about lighting fires.
